What happens when you get hit on the nose?

because, whenever i get hit (i never bleed) i get stunned and my eyes water and im dazed for about 10 seconds depending really on the severity of the impact. I've always wondered the science behind it and what actually happens to the cartilage itself and how the pain and effects are caused. Thanks!!
